Aye Yi Yi!!!
Well, that will be a weekend that none involved will ever forget! It wasn't
even the weather providing the challenges. Mother Nature did play her part in
knocking over hundreds of trees along and across the trail, making it very
difficult at times to find our way, even leaving the parking lot? I demanding
section of the KT to say the least, the boys covered about 8 miles, some
covered a few more :) And what outing would be complete without a call to the
Sheriff? All's well that ends well, thankfully!
Can someone please send me some info on the
Camporee Weekend - This is really old stuff - we need to update. Boy that
webmaster is behind!!
2008 Boundary Waters Canoe Area Trip
In June 6 scouts and 5 adults ventured to the Northern end of the
Gunflint Trail in Minnesota for a week of canoeing. We had an awesome time
despite some less than ideal weather the first couple days. The opportunity to
spend time in true unspoiled wilderness, see and hear wildlife including a
bear, moose, beaver, plenty of bugs and the loons was a real treat. I think
everyone in the group agreed it was a scouting experience they will remember
always.
2007 Cycling/camping weekend
WHEW!! What a weekend! Congratulations to the boys who went and
really showed some determination to make it happen. Although not everyone
completed every ride due to physical or mechanical problems, everyone gave
thier best efforts and really worked hard. A summary of rides...11 miles on
Friday night to reach camp, 14 miles on Saturday morning (that wrong turn added
a couple miles to the plan), 15+ miles on Saturday afternoon and then 11 more
miles home on Sunday morning. For a grand total of 51 miles over three days for
any boy that completed all rides. This is a great start completing at least 3
of the required rides on Cycling Merit Badge. Also, a special congratulation to
Chris for finishing his Cycling Merit Badge rides by completing his 50 miler on
Saturday in lieu of the other 2 rides, giving him a weekend total of over 70
miles! Awards go out to Daniel for the most interesting mechanical malfunction
for his complete destruction of a rear sprocket, to Chris for the best wipe out
of the weekend on the way home Sunday morning and to L2 - for the best
Pineapple Upside-Down Cake I've ever had on a campout! Great Job to all!!
Canoe Training
A good time was had by all who attended our first canoe training day on
beautiful Lake Monroe. The weather held up for us with only a brief sprinkle as
we were getting off the water. The 5 Scouts who dragged themselves out of bed
at 5 A.M. were able to learn and practice strokes, giving them more mastery of
thier canoe. Oh, and we had some fun too with a timed race across the bay and
some "tag" on the water. Only one canoe got swamped, and they were asking for
it :) Thanks to Mr. Driscoll for organizing all the food for the day as well.
Summer Camp Recap
We had 17 scouts and 3 adults attend the entire week of summer camp at Camp
Ransburg. Although the temperature was a bit warm the first two days, it became
more comfortable after the overnight rain on Monday night. Throughout the week
we had a very active group. We completed 27 merit badges and had many many
partials. 3 Scouts completed thier Firecrafter Camper rank, 2 completed
Woodsman and all 4 of our Firecrafter Candidates completed the in-camp portion
of the Firecrafter Rank (Grand Ritual is August 17-19 where they will finish.)
We had 6 very enjoyable campfire programs from these candidates. We also had a
very late Friday night and Saturday morning as they worked feverishly to pop
thier spark. Additionally, all three adults completed the Scoutmasters Merit
Badge and both Bill and Shannon completed the Scoutmaster Specific training,
outdoor leader skills, Leave No Trace and Trek safely trainings. (Mr. Driscoll
already had all these done of course.) A very fun week, a very productive week,
I can't wait to go back next year!
